She belts, "I won't hide who I am," and smiles triumphantly. Luckily, Bucky - of all people - pops up in the middle section to show some vocal chops and character depth (which are unfortunately both absent in the sequels), which spurs Addison into a key change and an upbeat final chorus. Then it gets a little bogged-down in a flashback montage and really, what is the point when we've just seen this stuff happen thirty minutes ago? It starts off with a long closeup of Addison's face, and for all my jokes above, I have to say that Meg Donnelly's acting feels so earnest and genuine that I'm glad we get to see her go through this wave of emotions. ![]() In each movie, there's a song where Addison (Meg Donnelly) has to feel a crushing moment of doubt, and then realize that if she can just be herself and be proud then she can do anything and overcome all the obstacles and achieve world peace and save the polar bears and maybe, just maybe, the world will be a little safer for popular cheerleaders to take off their wig and reveal another wig underneath. "Someday (Z3)" doesn't deserve top ten, but it's a significant moment for the franchise. They also have a little "Summer Nights" split-screen moment which is a bit silly, on top of everything else going on with the aliens. Watching it on YouTube, I realize how absolutely crazy this looks to anyone who doesn't know what's going on - especially the shots of Addison in the spaceship. In context of the movie, it's pretty intense because on first watch it seems like this really might be the end. The decision to split up the lines between most of the major characters (and also the fact that the lines correlate well with each character's headspace) helps differentiate it from previous covers, and adds some emotional weight. At this point, the song feels a little worn out, and I almost wish they had tried to write something new specifically for Addison's farewell.Īll that being said, this version still hits. "Someday (Z3)" ( Zombies 3, 2022) **MAJOR SPOILERS in this one**Īs my friend wisely pointed out, this reprise would be a little higher if Zombies 2 hadn't also included a version. That set piece is easily one of the best in the series, and I'm sad we don't get to see more of it in the third film.ġ3. That being said, I loved the transition of locations and ending in the wolf den the second half of the song is much stronger. It loses the originality of the franchise IMO. The verses are a little weak, and potentially controversial opinion: I don't like the prom setting. I think it's at a slight disadvantage because it's stuck in the middle of the trilogy, so it ends up feeling like another feel-good dance number. I had the same reaction with some of the Descendants finales. On paper, this song has all the right elements: a fun ensemble, a catchy chorus (and everyone gets a line!), and some great costumes/production design.īut compared to the more character-driven songs in the franchise, it feels a little generic ( HSM2's finale was titled "All for One"). When they're done right (see: "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" from Ella Enchanted), they bring all the characters together in a fun way that also gets the message of the movie across.
